Port Vita camp (where you can hunt and fish) from landThe Port Vita Camp (Latitude N58o 03.86', Longitude W153o 04.63') is a year-round facility located at the site of a former herring oil refinery built in the 1930s. Some of the buildings have been remodeled and are still in use today. Remnants of old structures and machinery around the property provide an opportunity to investigate and ponder the unique history of this remote facility.

Since 1995, we have been engagged in an on-going project of improving and adding new living quarters. All the cabins have small wood-burning stoves, full queen size beds in addition to bunk beds, and now each has its own bathroom.  There are also two private bedrooms in the main lodge building with twin beds in each.  Our small cabins are perfect for families or small groups of fishing companions, while a bedroom in one of our remodeled houses with bath and shower facilities will suit others. We also have a wood-fired sauna ("banya") for you to relax in after an adventurous day. Electricity is available until bedtime. We have around-the-clock radio and satellite communications available to Kodiak and to other nearby lodges in the event of an emergency.

Interior of a typical cabin which you can leave to go hunt and fishGenerous Alaskan home cooked meals, often featuring the "catch of the day", are served family style in our central dining area. We use our Italian wood-fired pizza oven often for preparing numerous treats ... and pizzas, and regularly enjoy barbequeing outside.  Packed lunches are provided in the field if we're going to be out all day. There is a central living and lounge area with a wide selection of VCR movies to watch, games to play, and plenty of room to just relax near the fire and read or swap stories.  We also have a satellite TV system.

We often catch halibut over 100 lbs. in Raspberry Strait, right out in front of the lodge (no long boat trips and queasy stomachs). We also enjoy great salmon and char fishing in several nearby streams and rivers. If you're more adventurous or simply in the mood, our guides can even take you to a wide range of fishing holes which contain seemingly unlimited amounts of fish just waiting to be caught.

Regular whale sightings are a pleasant surprise and, in addition, we always see lots of sea otters, eagles, and sea ducks.  Each year we have built on our previous successes and located new fishing holes, purchased more fishing equipment, and spent more time exploring new areas and new fishing techniques.  This means even more spectacular and enjoyable trips for our guests, all with easy access to our lodge.
