The addition of the 33' welded aluminum sport charter boat to our collection of boats has been a big success. It has extensive electronic gear and safety equipment. The tough seaworthy hull is specially designed for Kodiak waters, and with the two 225 hp Yahama outboards for propulsion, it gets us to our hot spots in a hurry. We found it to be a quite comfortable way to spend time in more remote areas on our bear hunts, and the design lends itself nicely to ocean fishing for halibut and salmon. With the small inflatable boat we carry on board, we can safely access more streams and beaches than ever before, thus increasing the stream fishing opportunities. Most weeks we are able to fish at least four different streams for salmon and char. In late September and early October, we also catch and release several nice sized (30+ inches) steelhead in three of these streams.
The red salmon (Sockeye) start to show up in the saltwater and
nearby streams in late May and provide a challenge for flyfishing early
in the summer. Trolling and mooching for king salmon (Chinook) also
begins then and we
continued to catch a few 20+ lb. kings throughout the summer. By
mid-July
the pink salmon (Humpies) have arrived in large number in numerous
streams
nearby providing a great opportunity for both expert and novice anglers
to
catch plenty of bright, feisty and quite good tasting salmon (weighing
5
to 8 lbs. typically) on light tackle and flies. Meanwhile, by mid-July,
we
start catching the silver salmon (Coho) in the seawater near camp by
downrigging,
mooching, and casting from the boat to large schools of baitfish. By
mid-August
the silvers (10 to 16 lbs. typically) were congregating in the tidal
areas
and after the first of September the silvers have started up the
streams.
The halibut fishing has been superb. We have located several new hot
spots
each year but right out front of the lodge continues to be probably our
best
spot and we catch halibut all season long! For those of our guests
preferring
to take home part of their catch, we have freezers -- no one left
without
a full cooler again this year. Deer hunting has been excellent
due to a previous low winter kill, elk hunting remained good, and
there
seems to be more bears than ever -- so bear hunting has been excellent.
